Continuing its ambitious growth agenda, Campos Mello Advogados, which is associated with global firm DLA Piper LLP, has hired an insurance partner from fellow Latin Lawyer 250 firm Azevedo Sette Advogados.

Jaqueline Suryan, 32, joined Campos Mello on 2 March, raising the firm’s partner count to 28.

Suryan, who has experience in healthcare, private pensions and insurance distribution, joins the team led by partner Marcela Hill. Suryan has worked on several deals for insurers like Chubb, Zurich, Scor and Terra Brasis/Austral, and also advised on BB Seguridade’s merger with Spanish insurer Mapfre last year.

Managing partner Fabio Perrone Campos Mello says Suryan’s arrival will add further quality to the firm’s insurance practice. “She has a deep understanding of Brazilian insurance regulations and is ideally positioned to advise companies that are navigating complex transactions.”

Suryan is the second partner hire since the firm started a new five-year strategic plan, which it kicked off by recruiting a life sciences and intellectual property litigator from boutique Atém & Sá. Then, Campos Mello told Latin Lawyer the plan includes “ambitious” growth targets and is in tandem with expectations for Brazil’s “vigorous economic recovery.”

Earlier in 2019, the firm promoted two lawyers to the partnership, boosting its corporate and disputes practices. But Campos Mello also saw its anti-corruption head depart to Machado Meyer Advogados last year.

Campos Mello originated in Rio de Janeiro and has long been recognised as a real estate powerhouse. Since 2016, it strengthened its presence in São Paulo and made consistent investments to become full-service. The firm now has several strong practices in both transactional and non-transactional areas.

Azevedo Sette’s Luiz Sette wishes Suryan the best. “Jaqueline is an excellent professional and has given a great contribution to our insurance area.” Sette says the firm has four partners dedicated to insurance litigation. The firm boosted the partnership by promoting Fabricio Dib in 2019. Sette adds that the firm plans to hire more experts for the practice, particularly in the accident insurance claims area.
