Tauil & Chequer Advogados, Mayer Brown LLP′s alliance firm in Brazil, has launched a full capital markets practice by hiring a junior partner from Machado, Meyer, Sendacz e Opice Advogados.

Carlos Motta joined the firm on Monday along with a small team of associates.

Alexandre Chequer, managing partner of Tauil Chequer, says this is part of a continuing strategy to build the firm as a competitor to Brazil′s legal titans. "We are bringing people in those areas in which we are not leaders – we did not previously have the capacity for public offerings, for example," he says. "With Carlos we are very happy – with his reputation and practice we are for sure among the top firms in Brazil for capital markets."

Such a strategy – which Chequer says is continuing, although he declined to give specifics – is giving the firm a reputation for aggressive lateral hiring. But Chequer says the advent of a firm like his is a sign of a mature market: "and as that happens, this kind of competition is good for everyone: lawyers have options and opportunities, and everyone has the chance to be successful."

While acknowledging the risks of rapid growth, he says assimilating a large number of lawyers has actually been easier than he thought it would be. "One good thing is that we looked for people with the same profile and values," he says. "Unlike some of the larger firms, we are not an umbrella containing several firms, but one firm together – it makes our organisation much more efficient." He adds that what he sees as the greater sense of ownership among partners makes his firm an attractive one to join.

José Roberto Opice, senior partner at Machado, Meyer, says he regrets Motta′s decision, but that it will have "no impact on our strong and well-known capital markets practice – particularly because he has joined a firm which is not known in this area, where he will have to work hard to build a new practice."

He added: "His success here depended on our large capital markets practice – whether he will succeed in developing his own will be seen in the future." He also noted that as Motta was only elected to the partnership last year, that further showed that the "effect will be virtually nil."

Tauil & Chequer - affiliated with Mayer Brown LLP most recently hired Laura Bumachar from Barbosa Müssnich & Aragão to its disputes team; in September, it also brought Juliano Moretti in as a partner in its São Paulo office, along with three associates from his old firm, Rulli & Moretti Advogados; then in October it hired tax lawyer Gonçalo Falcão as a partner in its Rio de Janeiro office.
